The British countryside is an asset well worth protecting

SIR – Contrary to the claims by Bob Neill, the Local Government Minister (report, August 7), the Campaign to Protect Rural England and the National Trust, by drawing attention to the serious flaws in the proposed planning reforms, are pursuing nothing more or less than the long-term public interest in the development and use of land.

As respected, long-established organisations with considerable expertise in land planning, we are deeply concerned that without a fundamental rethink, these proposals will place at huge risk our countryside, one of our greatest national assets, as well as the sensible development of our urban areas.

We are urging everyone who cares about the planning system to join us in persuading the Government to think again.

Peter Waine
Chairman, Campaign to Protect Rural England
Simon Jenkins
Chairman, National Trust
